Understanding SSDI Eligibility
A plain-language walkthrough of who typically qualifies for SSDI and how the process is evaluated.
SSDI eligibility is based on two main factors: your work history (measured in 'work credits') and whether your medical condition meets the Social Security Administration's definition of disability — generally, a condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death, that prevents you from performing substantial work.
Unlike some benefit programs, SSDI isn't means-tested. What matters is your earnings record and medical documentation, not your household income or assets.
Most first-time applications take three to six months to receive an initial decision. Many applicants are initially denied and pursue an appeal — this is common and doesn't necessarily reflect the strength of the underlying claim.
